Vein Treatments

Sclerotherapy is a safe and non-invasive treatment for spider veins. You can watch them disappear before your eyes!

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat spider veins and varicose veins. The procedure involves injecting a solution into the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and eventually disappear. Sclerotherapy can be used on both spider veins and varicose veins, but it is more commonly used to treat spider veins.

The results of sclerotherapy can vary, but most patients see a significant improvement in the appearance of their veins after a few treatments. Sclerotherapy can be performed on an outpatient basis, and multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve desired results. Overall, sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for spider veins and varicose veins that can provide long-lasting results.

How Sclerotherapy Works

Sclerotherapy treatment involves the injecting of a sclerosing solution directly into the vein. The solution acts like a glue causing the vein walls to stick together, which results in the vein collapsing in on itself. The blood then re-routes to healthier veins whilst the injected/collapsed vein breaks down and gets absorbed into the surrounding tissue.

Sclerotherapy is appropriate for the treatment of spider veins and large varicose veins. This process often requires multiple treatments depending on the severity of the veins. During your initial consultation, your vein specialist will advise you on the number of sessions recommended.

All of our treatments are performed within the clinic and are non-invasive, walk in-walk out procedures. No need for full-day hospital visits! The sclerotherapy treatment will generally take only 30 minutes and does not require any anaesthetic. You may feel a slight stinging feeling as the solution enters the vein; however, this discomfort is short term and will subside quickly.

Prepping the vein area

First, the affected area is cleansed with an antiseptic solution to ensure the area is clean and ready for injection.

Injecting the solution

A very thin needle is used to inject the sclerosing agent into the vein which causes the vein to collapse the veins.

Compression and aftercare

Finally, a compression bandage is applied to help improve circulation and prevent the formation of new spider or varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy Cost

The cost of sclerotherapy depends on the number of veins treated, the size of the veins, and the type of solution used. Prices can range from $200 to $800 per treatment session.

What To Expect

All vein treatment journeys begin with an initial consultation with our vein specialists. In the consultation, our doctors observe the area/s you are concerned about and develop a treatment plan whilst also informing you of the full costs associated with the treatment.

In order to give you the best and most accurate treatment advice, we use our in-house ultrasound machine to assess and map the deeper veins that are unseen on the surface. The ultrasound will give the vein specialist a clear picture that will guide the best type of treatment most suitable for you.

Sclerotherapy Recovery

Recovery from sclerotherapy is typically quick. Patients are asked to wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid further irritation of the injection site. You’ll need to wear compression stockings for 3-7 days after the injections to help with healing and ensure regular walking. Following these simple guidelines can help ensure a quick and smooth recovery from sclerotherapy within a week or two.

Sclerotherapy Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, sunbathing, and prolonged exposure to heat immediately after treatment.
  • Wear compression stockings for two to three weeks after treatment in order to help the body absorb the sclerosant.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the procedure including running, lifting weights, and even long walks.

Sclerotherapy FAQs

While the results of sclerotherapy are not immediate, most patients see a significant improvement within a few weeks. In some cases, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve optimal results. However, sclerotherapy is typically very effective at improving the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins. As such, it is often considered to be the gold standard treatment for these conditions.
No, a doctor’s referral is not required for appointments.
Treatments are privately charged; however, most carry a Medicare rebate. You can claim a rebate on up to 6 sclerotherapy treatments in a calendar year.
Although sclerotherapy is generally considered a safe and effective treatment, some people experience discomfort during the procedure. The injection sites can cause some stinging or burning; the solution may also cause the skin around the injection site to feel itchy or irritated. In most cases, these side effects are mild and resolve on their own within a few days.
Varicose veins are large, swollen veins that often appear on the legs and feet. They are caused by valves in the veins that become damaged or weakened, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the vein. Pregnancy, obesity, and standing or sitting for long periods can stress the veins and contribute to the development of varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis. In some cases, varicose veins may signify more serious underlying health conditions, such as venous insufficiency or blood clots. If you have larger varicose veins that are causing pain or other symptoms, it is important to see a doctor for treatment. Self-care measures, such as wearing compression stockings and elevating your legs, can also help to relieve symptoms.
